The eight year old has a community project book to fill out for social studies, so yesterday I took her to the closest fire station and the police station serving our precinct. As I expected, the fireman was both bored with his Sunday and enthusiastic about improving community relations, so he showed us everything and talked our ears off with more information than the tot needed. But, she thought all of it it was neat. The officer at the police station, however, was not as forthcoming. I had to coax both of them along with the questions in the book and another cop asked in passing what he was doing, letting kids in the station. (!) Among the observations she noted in her project book were the broken clock, the food collection box for the less fortunate, and the high desk the officer sat behind. We were also told we could not buy thin blue line Mogen David keychains on the weekend. We were both a little disappointed by our visit, but then we went on to Miss Janet's open studio weekend. I had grabbed an unopened tray of Graul's almond macaroons on the way out of the house in response to a psychic awareness of Miss Janet running out of the cookies she advertised. And, good friend that she is, was not at all surprized. Oh, the paintings and her space looked fabulous! I hope the people who spoke for a piece called "Spot" were too beered up and renege.I gotta go back to the police station for the souvenier keychains!
