Life of Homer

I just think it's totally not fair that Homer gets to go back to sleep. Next time 'round, I'm coming back as a cat; nice spot in the sun, a couple squares a day, no driving on ice or tax and insurance mazes to get around...but with my luck, I'd probably be a working barn cat. There I'd be, shivering in the cold waiting for a rat and envious of the horses' steady feed. Heck, I'll just wear cat hair covered velour to go mop out Molly's.

Looking ahead

We have a forecast for snow, it is in fact already falling. And so I have tubbed up and frozen 4 quarts of a better variation of pesoles. There's a really nice burn in the back of my ears from tasting the chipotle broth. All of the furnaces I tend are burning and there's a chicken waiting for its bath tommorrow. Yes, I have problems- my mattress on the floor will poke me with springs and I have to find a job. The sign for Molly's got installed but will not illuminate. But I have done my very best for today. I have to figure out why the laundry flings itself against the dryer door and causes itself to stop. The younger daughter wants to know how to tell a boy car from a girl. A hundred Valentines want glitter and varnish. Tommorrow. Tommorrow is another day.

Safety 101

In my previous capacity as a Security Supervisor, then Associate Director of Community Safety for the art school's urban campus, we were always careful never to blame the victim when they were preyed apon by criminals. No matter what. It was my task to design and implement a safety education program that empowered the community members to take sensible precautions and close the windows of opportunity that hoodlums look for. I was a certified self-defense instructor, a trained killer and a skilled assessor of human behaviors. None of my students, when confronted by an armed robber, would say; "Whattaya gonna do, shoot ?".

Gaining steam

I had hoped to post a photo of the new illuminated sign at Molly's, but the guys in the cherry picker wouldn't install it, because they didn't want to be liable. For what, they would not elaborate, but the screened plexiglass panels fit into an elderly aluminum fixture which looks sort of rickity without them. Good thing we know so many members of the Scenics local. It should be up before the weekend. The steamer is coming today and the soda gun will arrive next week. Caroline figured out how to make the TVs work, since they are an alien concept for me. Meanwhile, I'm back at the farm today! The farmer is letting me run some freelance files through his services before I affiliate myself with another company. Or open my own brokerage over the bar...

oooohm

Mopping and mopping again after the weekend's mopping is starting to make headway on 70 years of bar grime at Molly's. Really. And besides the exercise, it's simple and straitforward work whose effects are immediate. Mop Zen. Last week my back hurt from stress so much that I could barely put my socks on. This week I am mopping, if gingerly. I don't even mind the footprints on my wet floor.

Arf, arf arf

Because I had a loaf of seven grain bread from the German bakery, and because Stix brought some Monteray Jack, we had cheese toast today at Molly's. The furnace seemed a bit inactive, so a trip to the basement revealed that it was firing, but needed fuel. Tommorrow. The furnace in this house is not firing, either. It's gas and my attempts to relight the pilot were not successful. Mr. Beetz is looking into it...and I hear it kicking into gear! Bravo, Mr. Beetz! It's 51 degrees in here. Everyone should hide an engineer in their spare room, I warrant.

Snow Day

Gosh it's cold outside and the wind against the windows drove the younger daughter into bed with me during the wee hours. Of course, Homer had to follow. If we weren't snowed in, I'd be loading up the car with more paintings, some minwax and brushes to work on the decor at Molly's. Instead, I am printing out some pictures to pop into ready-made frames, catching up on the laundry and maybe later...a pot roast with onions and stout!

The morning after

Oh! It's not morning anymore, is it? I might be feeling a little too...um, delicate...for shoveling snow this afternoon, having partied down with some old friends and meeting some new ones at our opening last night. Thanks, guys! I had a lovely time and there was quite an interesting crowd. I don't usually stay up so late. Coming soon, a coffee pot and probably a few mugs to put it in! internet downloads on the jukebox! Wireless hotspot! In the fullness of time, the draft beer will be running and I will have located some strings of beer lights and more "Baltimorbilia". Meanwhile I gotta go look at tommorrow's want ads. I was laid off yesterday.

The calm before the storm

No soda gun, the draft system's not in, there's dry wall dust and debris on the floor...I wonder if our jukebox will come in today? Our day time bar keep told us the people would come in, look around and leave again, and that's just what our day time bar keep did. Oh well. It ain't the Bellagio, hon. On the other hand, the new pool table's in, there's a killer selection of bottled beers as well as some fancy pants high end vodkas (and other spirits) and my older daughter is holding down the fort with hubby as I sit here chained to my computer in the corporate cubicle. Last night Miss Janet was sitting at the bar with us sipping beer, assessing the state of affairs and she declared it a work in progress. Oh! And tommorrow, we're getting a foot of snow!
