My succulent hero

Miss Joolie has a very special plant named Pointy, both pictured at left enjoying a little drinky-poo. Miss Joolie has done me the great honor of sending me a little button with Pointy's portrait when I expressed concern for the plant's health. She assures me that Pointy is a hardy sort and doing well despite their lifestyle choices, and I say, ROCK ON, Pointy! ROCK ON, Miss Joolie!

It's snowing. I guess I'm not putting the car's top down today. I wonder if the corporation will unchain us from our computers early...

Torturing your kids, continued

They're everywhere-you've seen them, those colorful, stretchy bracelets espousing good causes. The eight year old came home with a dark blue one that says "Fight Prematurity". Quite appropriate, I thought, for one who started out life at two pounds, five ounces...untill I realized she hadn't read it and didn't know what it meant. All she knew was that EVERYONE had them, lots of them, and she wanted more. "Well, where do you get them?", I asked. "I dunno, the internet?", she said. At this point I stopped sorting silverware and pulled a big fat yellow rubberband off a bunch of broccoli. "Here's a cause you can get behind!" I said as I handed it to her. "What does it say?" "Organically Grown"...

All inclusive

Thank you, Dr. King, Rosa Parks, Medgar Evers, Shirley Chisolm and an army of freedom fighters too vast to enumerate. Your generation's hard work and sacrifices have made this country a more equal place not just for African Americans, but for women, Asians, Hispanics, Gays, the physically challenged, the mentally handicapped, Atheists and insane midgets. We all benefit by a more level playing field and I'm grateful for opportunities unimagined by the little girl who watched the King and the Kennedys' funerals on TV in dismay.

Decorations

Today I loaded up the car with paintings to hang up at Molly's. I needed also to pick up a few things at the hardware store and drop the eight year old at a sleep-over. On the way out the door, I picked up that awful thing and told the child she had to hang on to it tight because it is very fragile and very, very valuable. (Smirk.) We finished up early at the hardware store, so we went to get pink plastic flowers for the awful thing, and I suggested to the eight year old that she needed to take it with her to her sleep over. "NO!" she protested, Then I threatened to show up in my leopard print pyjamas and curlers later to join the sleepover. "NO!" she protested. "You don't even have any curlers!" OK, I agreed, but when I dropped her off, I showed the awful thing to her little friend, with the pink plastic flowers, and the tot's jaw dropped open in amazement at its absolute ugliness.

Busy

Glasses, lots o locks, a window, some mud on that drywall, mmm...a door. There's no time to go searching for salvage woodwork right now, gotta pull a painting from the studio to hang on the back bar...some spray paint...

S'not head

The flu sure has a way of kicking the stuffing out of a person, at least for a while. All week I've been walking around like a zombie with pudding-for-brains, unable to think clearly through all the congestion. This lingering cough was loud enough yesterday for the lady in the next aisle to kindly walk over some cough drops and express her concern. Of course, it probably didn't help driving about with the car's top down, but when the temperature hits 70 degrees, well...

Wouldn'tchaknow? Awaiting my arrival after my absence from work was an e-mail in my in-box, entitled; "It's not too late!". The corporation is offering a free flu shot clinic next week, in the lunchroom, all convenient, like. The missive went on to cheerfully inventory all the symptoms and dangers of having the flu and urged all of us to take this simple precaution. Gnarrr...
