Apprehension

They've closed the tunnels under the harbor as a joint federal, state and local security operation. When I worked at the cubicle farm to the south, I would get the creeps big time using them twice a day. (It didn't matter which one I took) Imagine, as I did every single commute, the damage a simple car bomb would do to the world's only eight-lane underwater tunnel for vehicular traffic. I'm glad I don't have to use either tunnel anymore.

Heavenly

Have I died and been very, very good? The German bakery had marzipan torte on offer this morning, tiny layers of cake and marzipan, a hint of raspberry jam holding them together and coated with dark chocolate! And hot tea! With real cream! Oh, I would just be wriggling in ecstacy were I not at work...

With Sprinkles

So I spent a few moments of self recrimination wondering when did I last have a chocolate coated marzipan? And when have I last painted a picture? (I painted a 22'x30', I think, in July.) Why is there no hot tea in my life and why can't I stuff everything I have to do into my schedule? Two dozen cupcakes, with sprinkles- from the Edelweiss Bakery- we have to pick up before seven tommorrow morning, and it's giving me hives planning the school drop-off and the bar drop-in. And in the evening I hope to go visit at the hospital. All this and more was preying on my thoughts as I eased the car off Charles Street this evening and then I saw a guy in a motor chair crossing the intersection. He looked up at me with a goofy smile and a handwave all because I had elected not to to run him over. Well gosh! I thought to myself, who wouldn't stop? Then I remembered how hard it can be for even an able bodied pedestrian to cross the street at rush hour. And then I noticed the color blue in the sharp shadows of the low October light bathing old cornices with orange light..  After I collected some paperwork from a client and the the daughter who turns 9 (!) tommorrow, there was a big full moon, low on the horizon, illuminating our path home. I think I will make the hot tea happen. And I think I will swipe one of the cupcakes.

As it is

Early this morning Hubby received a call in his room with the news that the last addendum to our contract (to sell our house) had been accepted, signed off and faxed. Then he went back to sleep and promptly entertained nightmares of my spending 40k on a twenty year old Mercedes convertable. I mean, really. Should I want such a car, couldn't it be had for less? And if I were to spend 40k on an old used car, wouldn't I get something else? Happy Birthday, Babycakes. Mother and her bridegroom are much more comfortable this evening, I've seen them, done them some chores and the hospital is working to move them into a suite with each other. I can't tell you how relieved I feel. Except, of course, I am a bit embarressed to have waltzed into my stepfather's ICU and gaily ask: "How ya doin?" look at the floor and have him smirk at me: "You have any more stupid questions?".

Approaching Holding Pattern

Today Dr. Mom and Dr. Mike finally admitted they could no longer live on their own with us children, relatives and health care professionals dropping in...they also have had a graduate student living in the in-law suite, but a student needs to get out and attend school functions. After an extensive round of phone calls my parents were ambulanced to Hopkins for evaluation and admission this evening. I hope, rather unrealistically, that they can keep them together. That they want to stay together kept them from making arrangements until it came to this. Oy. Tommorrow will be very busy.

Shopping around

Hubby's birthday is coming up. I don't really know what to get for him as our finances are in a muddle and may swing either way. So we had this conversation;

"What would you like for your birthday this year, pickle foot? I couldn't find any boxer shorts with flaming dice or roulette wheels in your size..."

"Well how many men did you check before you gave up?"

On a Wednesday

Wednesday means pizza for the kid's lunch, a new city paper and today checks at the bar for certain distributors. I was blue during lunch, but was cheered to walk across the cobbles near the Washington Monument and watch three moving trucks deliver pianos to the venerable Peabody Institute. When I got to Molly's, our roofer/graffitto was done shimming up the bar for stability and I said to him "You The Man!". That's really nice. Then I tried to feed a poem whittled from a lot of website noise into the poem generator, but that didn't take. But, I got a gem:

something like highschoolers

let out of her

cat and she gasped, Yes!"

And now...some goat cheese or dark chocolates, or something interesting like that.

For every season

Time to hie me over to the lot store for thermals. I was looking for something like pyjama pants just now, due to a chill in the air, ( Okay, maybe in the mid sixties ) and nothing presents itself as suitable. Unbleached cotton thermal pants must be the the most attractive garment yet designed. I know this because...um, well. They have always worked for me. They used to look just fine with boots and a short skirt crowned with a mane of purple hair on one's head. The baggy knees...such a charming and poignant detail...But I digress. The problem with cheap lot store thermals is that they are always worn out by April and then they get thrown out. Then October always finds me trying to cover my behind.

Have you ever put your foot in your mouth and found that anything you could think of to apologize just magnified the enormity of your jerkdom? Ya-huhhh...

"Police: Science Lesson Leads To Homemade Moonshine

Teen Arrested, Accused Of Building Moonshine Distillery

FULTON, Md. -- Authorities said a teenager used what he learned from science class and the Internet to build an illegal moonshine distillery near his home.

Investigators said a woman walking her dogs discovered a corn whiskey still in a wooded area near Fulton in southern Howard County. Officers arrested the boy early Tuesday during a stakeout.

Government agents said the still was built from a bucket, a trash can and some copper pipe.

Authorities withheld the boy's name due to his age. The state comptroller's office said this represents the first moonshine distillery found in the state in five years." from WBAL news.
